Endless Crop Levy Worries Iringa Farmers

THE ever-demanded crop levy is still a burden to farmers in Iringa, who claim to be compelled to endure with double charges by authorities. Speaking before the Constitution Review Team mid this week, a farmer at Mtwivila Ward said the payments were too much for the farmers to afford.
"We always pay the levy to the authorities where our farms are located," she said. She was upset that the same levy was slapped on the produce that she ferried home from the farm. She wanted the new constitution to restrict crop levy on poor farmers.
"It is not fair to subject a farmer to payment of between 70,000 and 80,000/- as crop levy, yet I am not a trader, the food is for home consumption," she lamented.
The farmer further lamented for another Housing tax, which was executed by the local authorities in the district. "As a widow I worked hard to improve my income and used some of it to renovate my house, which caused me trouble," she said. She claimed that the land authorities have increased the House tax from 6,000/- to 15,000/- after she renovated her house.
